Austin Ali

Austin Ali (b. 1997) is a nationally acclaimed trumpeter and composer from Dallas, TX. Throughout his career, Austin has played lead trumpet in many ensembles including the Plano West Senior High School Jazz Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, and Symphony Orchestra. His compositions have been on display at the Dallas Museum of Art and have been played by the Shepton High School Wind Ensemble, Shepton High School Symphony Orchestra, Plano West Senior High School Wind Ensemble, University of Texas at Austin Jazz Ensemble, University of North Texas Five O’clock Lab Band, Mockingbird Brass Quintet, trombonist Christopher Bill, and the Austin Symphony Orchestra.
Austin has been recognized as both a jazz and classical trumpet soloist. Austin was recognized nationally by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra for his solo performance on the Plano West Jazz Ensemble’s recording of Dizzy Gillespie’s “A Night in Tunisia” in 2016. In 2014, Austin’s performance of the first movement of the Hummel Trumpet Concerto earned him the highest possible rating in the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest from the University of Texas professor of trumpet, Ray Sasaki. Austin has won awards from Texas Music Educations Association consistently in jazz and classical trumpet from 2011-2016.
Austin has also earned various state, national, and international awards for composition including 1st and 3rd place in the Austin Symphony Orchestra’s Texas Young Composers Competition, Finalist in the National Young Composers Challenge (2 years), 1st place in the Christopher Bill Trombone Composition Competition, and was accepted into the Juilliard School undergraduate program for composition in 2016.
Austin is currently in his first year at the University of Texas at Austin in the B.M. Music Composition and B.A. Plan II Honors programs. He studies composition under Dr. Russell Podgorsek and is on track to graduate in 2020. Austin aspires to attend graduate school enabling him to fulfill a dream of being a film scorer. In the meantime, Austin is looking forward to his upcoming tour of Guatemala performing with a brass band at the IGA International Jazz Festival.
